SO THE JOURNEY BEGINS......
"Pinch and a punch for the first day of the month!" and what better way to start. After months of preparation and apprehension it’s happening - I finally embark on my exciting adventure. The time for speculation and wondering is over. I’m going to get to see and experience Tanzania for myself and I can’t wait!!!
Over the past few years I’ve been lucky enough to be able to do a lot of voluntary work overseas with various charities such as VSO and SKIP but was fed up of coming back dissatisfied. We had helped a lot of people but left nothing behind. It was by volunteering at the Annual BACD conference that I got my first insight into what the charity was all about. Their concept of providing endurable care to those who were less fortunate in Africa hit a nerve. The opportunity to be involved with a training programme where my work would make a lasting difference had me sold.
How does Bridge2Aid (B2A) differ from other humanitarian projects? - it lays down a blueprint for a sustainable future. B2A is the UK’s fastest growing dental charity working in developing nations. Almost 75% of the world’s population have no access to the most simple dental pain relief. Oral health is recognised as a fundamental contributor to general health. People living in developing nations have in the past escaped many of the problems associated with a high-sugar diet, but this is now not the case. The influx of high-sugar carbonated soft drinks is just one of the factors contributing to a growing problem. Even remote populations now exhibit many cases of gross caries.
Chronic pain and infection are increasing. B2A is working to address this problem by providing emergency dentistry to those who are at greatest need whilst making a lasting change through training. Since 2002, B2A has worked to increase access to pain relief in Tanzania. Focusing on sustainability and empowering local people to improve their own lives over the long term, they now train more than 50 health workers each year. This training has not only directly treated tens of thousands of people but has also extended access to emergency dentistry services to people living in the rural areas.
